Fault finding and repairs

When the safety switch keeps tripping or half the house has gone dark, you want someone who can find the cause, not just reset the switch and leave. We trace faults methodically, fix what we find, and tell you plainly what caused it. Urgent faults are fitted in the same or next day wherever we can.

What we do

What the job can include

  • Safety switches and circuit breakers that keep tripping
  • No power to part or all of the house
  • Lights that flicker, dim or blow globes
  • Burning smells, buzzing, or warm switches and power points
  • Dead or intermittent power points and light switches
  • Water damage to wiring after a leak or storm
  • Faults left behind by previous work or DIY
Good to know

Before you book

While you wait

If a safety switch trips, unplug everything on that circuit and reset it once. If it holds, plug things back in one at a time to find the culprit. If it trips again with nothing plugged in, leave it off and ring us. Do not keep resetting it.

A burning smell is a call, not an email

A hot plastic or fishy smell from a switch, power point or the switchboard means something is overheating. Turn that circuit off at the board if you can find it, and ring us straight away.

How fault finding is charged

Nobody can quote a fault before finding it, so we quote a fixed diagnostic fee up front. Once we know the cause we tell you what the repair costs before doing it. Most faults are fixed on the same visit.

How it goes

Quote first, then the work

  1. Tell us the job

Ring, or send the form with what you need and your suburb. Photos help.

  2. Get a fixed quote

Small jobs are priced over the phone; bigger ones after a quick look. Either way, in writing.

  3. We do the work

Booked for a time that suits you, done by a licensed electrician, tested before we leave.

  4. COES and tidy-up

We clean up, walk you through what was done and email your Certificate of Electrical Safety.

Questions

Fault finding and repairs: common questions

Why does my safety switch keep tripping?
Nine times out of ten it is an appliance: a heater element, a fridge, a washing machine, an outdoor light full of water. The rest are wiring faults, often from moisture or rodents in the roof. We test the circuit and each appliance on it to find which.
Half the house has no power. Is that an emergency?
Turn off the circuit at the board if you can and check the fridge and freezer have power. If they do and nothing is hot or smelling, it can wait until the next working day. If a whole side of the house is out, one of your two mains phases may have failed, which is a distributor fault: ring them as well as us.
Do you do after-hours call-outs?
By arrangement. We do not run a round-the-clock service, but a genuine emergency (a burning smell, sparking, water in the switchboard) gets a call back and, where we can, a same-evening visit. Please ring rather than email.
